
Nick Razum and "Sieglinde"
Nicholas Razum is one of the founders of the search dog unit within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The unit has been in existence since 1983 and searches for missing children, lost hikers, victims of Alzheimer's, victims of disaster, and dead bodies. Nick also was one of two members that started the search dog program with the Ventura County Sheriff's Department in 1989.
Deputy Razum has been training and handling Search Dogs since 1979. Since that time, he has handled Bloodhounds, German Shepherds, and a Labrador retriever. Nick's Bloodhounds and 2 of his Shepherds were scent-discriminating Trailing dogs. In the 1980's, his first GSD "Taboo" was the first German Shepherd tested and certified to the same level as a Bloodhound in California. "Sieglinde" pictured above was a cadaver dog certified with California State Office of Emergency Services, as well as LA County. Dep. Razum was appointed to Governor's committee that set the standards for the State-wide certification, and is an evaluator that tests and certifies Cadaver Dogs for OES.
Deputy Razum a Reserve Captain and Level I Reserve by training, and worked with the Search Dog unit as an Operations Leader and trainer since it was founded, and from 2000 - 2005 was training and handing detection K9's for a division of LASD's Detective Bureau. He now works for LASD performing a variety of canine, emergency medical, SAR, and consulting work for the Department. His wife Marcy Taylor is also a canine handler, trainer, lecturer, and certification official for cadaver dogs in the State of California.
Nick Razum holds a MSc degree in Photobiology/Photophysics and a PhD in Health Sciences Research and Education. His dissertation was related to canine olfactory physiology and the physics and properties of scent and target odors. Training and handling working dogs is his avocation. For his vocation, Nick is a Director in Research and Development for a major biotech company in Southern California. Dr. Razum is extensively published, and has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed book chapters, articles, and abstracts, in Laser Physics, Photomedicine, and drug development. Nick has lectured frequently on physics, lasers, photobiology, physiology, and drug development, throughout the United States, Europe, and the Orient.
Dr. Razum has been researching "human scent" for many years, and lectures frequently on this topic at seminars and conferences in California and other states. He has been invited to lecture or train dogs/handlers for many agencies including the FBI, Southern California Coroners, United States Police Canine Association, National Disaster Search Foundation, and others. He additionally teaches "Canine Applications in Law Enforcement", "K-9 Helitac", "Cadaver Dog Training", "Satellite Global Positioning", and other topics.
